A Succinct Explainer: What is Happening in the Department of Education's K-12 Work

There is too much going on. So much is changing so quickly.

With a deep breath, I remind myself that a small part that I can play is to share resources to help teach, think about, or challenge what's happening in U.S. public education.

This video from ProPublica is a very good, concise and fair summation of what is happening in K-12 education.

A note: It was part of my job in our teacher ed program for years to teach a basic unit on religion in public schools. Those students identifying as Christian were grateful and surprised when we talked about how clearly the law protected students' religious rights and parents' influence because they'd always learned otherwise in their communities. They and all the students learned – with the actual constitutional language and key case law – that anyone who says that religion and prayer have been removed from public schools is either deeply ill-informed or intentionally lying to further their own agenda.
