Proposed federal budgets would cut TRIO, the program that since the 60s has provided supports to low-income first-generation college students navigating campus.
Because, they say "the pendulum has swung and access to college is not the obstacle it was for students of limited means.”
On. What. Planet?
Though most programs are at community colleges, a Federalist Society staffer who is in favor of the cuts argues:
federal money is opening too many doors to four-year degrees and postgraduate education. There’s an “overenrollment problem,” he said; too many students are attending college without being prepared to graduate.
Clearly, he believes, only students of means deserve to take a shot at college.
As is every day now, today is a great day to call your representatives in the House and Senate and to urge your friends to do the same. 5calls makes it easy.
